Thoughtful
Legacy Planning

There is a profound difference between deciding what happens to your belongings yourself and leaving those decisions for someone else to make later.
Thoughtful Legacy Planning gives you the opportunity to simplify your surroundings, preserve what matters, share meaningful possessions with the people you love, and make intentional decisions about what you eventually leave behind.
Inspired in part by the Swedish tradition of döstädning, often called Swedish Death Cleaning, this process isn't about preparing for death. It is about living more intentionally today while making the future easier for your family.
MDW Consulting helps you thoughtfully review the belongings you have accumulated throughout your life. Together, we can identify meaningful possessions and family heirlooms, determine what you still use and enjoy, consider what you would like to give to family or friends, recognize items that may have financial value, and create a responsible plan for the things you are ready to release.
Family can be part of this process as well. Thoughtful Legacy Planning can create opportunities for conversations that might otherwise never happen: Who would actually like this? What does this object mean to you? Is there a story behind it that your children don't know? Having those conversations now allows decisions to be made together rather than leaving loved ones to guess later.
It can also be an opportunity to preserve the stories behind the possessions. The history of a piece of furniture, the origin of a collection, or the reason an ordinary-looking object was treasured may ultimately be more meaningful to the next generation than its monetary value.
When you are ready to part with something, we help you understand your options. Items might be gifted, donated, consigned, sold through an appropriate venue, or selectively purchased by MDW Consulting when appropriate. There is never an expectation that everything needs to be sold—or even that everything needs to go.
The goal is to create clarity: preserving memories, reducing future burdens, and allowing you to decide for yourself what your belongings become part of next.
